Lantana (Verbenaceae) is a naturalized plant in Taiwan and considered as a weed because of its invasiveness. A total of 44 Lantana plants, including 39 wild plants and 5 horticultural plants, were collected in Taiwan. In order to study the relationship of those plants, co-HPLC examined each anthocyanin peak and content ratio in the corollas of mature flowers as chemical characters, along with 2 morphological characters. As a result of the HPLC analysis, 6 anthocyanin peaks were detected in those 43 Lantana plants, except white flower of Lantana nivea , which exhibite no anthocyanin content. The five of them were identified as 3- glucoside, 3, 5- diglucoside and 3- malonylglucoside of cyanidin, and 3, 5- diglucoside and 3-malonylglucoside of peonidin. The anthocyanin ratios in each taxon are different; they presented the 4 groups of significant ratios, classified from TypeⅠ, A2: A4: A5(5: 45: 48); TypeⅡ, A2: A4: A6(23: 42: 3 or 40: 18: 4); TypeⅢ, A1: A3: A4 (35: 28: 4) and Type Ⅳ, A2: A4 (18: 84). Based on these results, we can distinguish wild species from the cultivars, and understanding how the wild species are becoming more diverse. It may provide valuable information to elucidate the interrelationship of Lantana plants in Taiwan and contribute to the systematic treatment of them.
