Species complex is a group of taxa that have a wide variety of morphological characters with ambiguous boundaries between each taxon. It is difficult to separate each taxon because hybridization, polyploidization and apogamy often involved in the speciation event. Humata repens (L. f.) Diels and its close relatives were defined as a species complex in this study because of the continuously morphological variation. Four scientific names have been used for the Humata repens complex in Taiwan. Integrated methodologies had been applied in this study including morphology, cytology, reproductive biology and molecular phylogeny. Principal components analysis of 14 morphological characters revealed nine morphological forms within the H. repens complex in Taiwan. Both triploid(2n=120)and tetraploid(2n=160)existed in Taiwan and reproduce by apogamy. The incongruence between cpDNA and nrDNA trees indicates the hybrid origin of most individuals. Based on the present results, we hypothesis that there were at least two close ancestors belonging to this complex distributed in its diversity center. Through hybridization and polyploidization, some polyploidy genotypes dispersed to Taiwan then shaped the extant distribution.
