This study mainly investigated the characteristics of ambient particulates during the Asian dust storm periods. The experiments were conducted by using a dichotomous sampler( Dichot) and a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor( MOUDI) to collect particulate matters and to further analyze the ionic species. The particulates were sampled for 7 days every month during the period from January 2006 to May 2007. Totally 62 Dichot samples and 18 size-segregated aerosol samples were collected. These results were compared with the previous results of Asian dust storm investigated from 2002 to 2005. The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of Asian dust storm on the air quality in central Taiwan. The results showed that two successive Asian dust storms had transported to Taiwan during 1/28 to 1/29 and 1/31 to 2/1 in 2007. The average concentrations of PM10 were 94.5 μg/m3 and 104.1 μg/m3, respectively. The ratios of PM2.5-10/PM10 were 0.54 and 0.43. The concentrations of coarse species SO42- and Ca2+ were 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 1.4 times higher than those measured during the non-Asian dust storm period. The dust storm episode on 1/31 had brought significant amount of sulfates to Taichung. This phenomena might be due to the passage of Asian dust storm along coastal industrial area in China. Therefore the concentrations of SO2 and sulfates were both higher in this event. Another Asian dust storm passed over Taiwan was also observed during 4/16 to 4/17 in 2007. However in this period, the Asian dust storm moved to Japan due to the southwest airflow effect. Only Taipei was affected by this dust storm. In this event, the weather was under high pressure recirculation and southwest airflow patterns. The wind speeds were generally lower and easily caused air pollution episode. In conclusion, nine Asian dust storms were observed during the years of 2002 and 2007. The concentrations of PM10 in these Asian dust storms ranged from 94.6 μg/m3 to 143.8 μg/m3. The sea salt species Na+, Cl- and the crustal element Ca2+ were significantly increased. The meteorological conditions showed a trend that wind speed inreased, and humidity reduced during the passage of dust storm. Based on results obtained from the air quality monitoring stations in central Taiwan, the worse air quality was found in 2004, and followed by those in 2006 and 2005.
