摘要: 山下凱倫的《橘子回歸線》從多層次的角度處理邊界跨越的議題。小說以魔幻寫實的筆觸刻劃出都市與邊界空間中多種族、跨族裔的社會現狀;同時也描繪出超越國家、種族、文化等界線的族裔社群之跨國結盟。針對小說中描寫美國與墨西哥兩國的邊界實境,論文將討論兩個交織的議題:除去西方修辭中進步主義的神話;及探究邊界跨越者的地理移動與能動性。本文先從地理的角度閱讀小說中所描寫西方世界在政治、經濟、族裔、階級與性別上對種族他者(非白人)的壓迫,藉以質疑在概念上與地理上,西方二元劃界的合理性與資本主義剝削的合法性。 另一方面,通過聯繫小說中的三位角色--拉斐拉(Rafaela)、阿克安奇(Arcangel)、巴比(Bobby),本文企圖從邊界的位址建立一個超越國界的跨族裔的結盟。雖然是跨族裔、跨國的結合,在相同的政治使命下,內部的差異依然可以保留。是以,根據文化、族裔的相異特質,討論將採取不同角度檢視越界者能動的可能。安札杜爾(Anzald&uacute;a)的邊界理論將用來解讀多族裔背景的拉斐拉,及其跨國神話製造與認同過程。寓言式的角色阿克安奇以魔幻的即席展演詮釋美洲歷史、文化,此能力可視為一種政治策略,目的在喚醒墨西哥受壓迫者的政治意識,進而促使群眾跨越美墨邊界、形成跨國文化。為求生存而從亞洲移民來到美國的巴比,攜帶亞洲式的家庭價值融合西方資本主義,在移民及跨越美墨邊界的同時,提供亞洲式的資本主義,藉以挑戰以個人主義為主的西方資本主義。 本文認為這三個角色可視為從南方(墨西哥)及東方(亞洲)浮現的集體力量。此力量在洛杉磯(西方的邊陲地帶)匯集,擾亂西方論述的同時亦灌注其新的能量。據此,在跨國的情境下,小說中所描繪的跨越族裔社群的合作(即,拉美與亞美社群的結合),可視為潛在改變西方地圖繪製具生產力的可能性。
Karen Tei Yamashita's Tropic of Orange deals much with the issues of border crossing from various perspectives. With the stroke of magic realism, the novel portrays not only the multiracial and trans-ethnic realities of the urban city and borderlands in the global context, but also the transnational alliance of ethnic communities across national, racial and cultural boundaries. The thesis is organized around two interlocking themes: demystifying the Western rhetoric of the positive progressivism, and investigating the movements and mobility of border crossers. The discussion will firstly scrutinize the novel's delineation of the colonial and neo-colonial oppressions in Americas which also brings forth class, race and gender divisions. The attention will then move to three characters Rafaela, Arcangel and Bobby in the novel to explore their flexible movement across the borders as a way to disrupt the Western rhetoric and capitalistic exploitation. By bringing these three characters together, I aim to forge a transnational and trans-racial solidarity. Separately, drawing on Anzald&uacute;a's border theory, I read Rafaela's process of transnational mythmaking and identity formation. Arcangel's ability to spontaneously improvise is taken as his strategy to wake the political consciousness of the underprivileged and instigate them moving across the North. Focusing on a reading of “Asian family values,” I examine Bobby's materialistic improvisation in the process of migrations, and suggest an Asian mode of capitalism. Moreover, I believe that the three characters serve as two separate collective forces emerging from the South (as the Mexicans) and the East (as the Asians). The two forces, merging in the city of Los Angeles, disrupt and infuse new energies to Western discourse. Therefore, this integration of trans-ethnic communities in the U.S. serves as the productive possibilities to transform Western cartography.
