摘要: This thesis is an overview of an immigrant writer's, Gary Shteyngart's fiction published so far. It aims to points out that in all of Shteyngart's books—no matter it is The Russian Debutante's Handbook, Absurdistan or Super Sad True Love Story—a tendency to de-center the dominant is at work. And Shteyngart does not do so by shaping his protagonists into heroes or heroin. Instead, he characterizes these de-centered, complicit, cooperative, meek and mentally weak figures to be thrown into disasters. These reactors bear the mission to de-center the prescriptive and existed values, letting the readers de-center from the dominant cultural logics they are sunk in. This paper thus discusses how Linda Hutcheon's theory of postmodernist decentralization works in effect in Shteyngart's three novels. The first chapter tackles the immigrant perspective. It takes a closer look at the new rise upper class—the bourgeois bohemians—and Shteyngart's parodies and problematization of them. The second one explores the problems of globalization. I try to interpret Shteyngart's intention in its satiric tone and de-centered position. The last chapter dwells on the de-centralization in a dystopian near future. It has already presented us the worst scenarios if some actions are not taken. Through postmodernist decentralization, we will see how Shteyngart moves our fixated perspective in the dominant to the new angle we have not imagined before.
本論文為蓋瑞史坦迦特(Gary Shteyngart)結至目前為止所出版的作品提供一個綜論,旨在點出其三本虛構作品《俄人初登場實用手冊(The Russian Debutante's Handbook)》、《荒誕國度(Absurdistan)》、《超難過的真實愛情故事(Super Sad True Love Story) 皆具去主流、去中心化(decentralization)的傾向。史坦迦特並非將其書中角色形塑為超級英雄或英雌,而是將其角色塑造為偏離中心、與主流共謀、平凡無奇、合作又軟弱的人物,而且總是將他們置身於險境中。這些被動反應的角色身負重任,他們必須使固有觀點、固有價值崩壞,並動搖、甚而崩毀讀者自身所處的主流觀點。本文因而主論琳達哈欽(Linda Hutcheon)的「後現代去中心化(Postmodernist Decentralization)」理論如何在史坦迦特的三部作品裡作用。第一章主論《俄人初登場實用手冊》中的移民觀點,探討中產波西米亞(Bourgeois Bohemian)階級的崛起,並探究史坦迦特對此如何嘲仿與問題化。第二章則探討全球化的問題,本章試就《荒誕國度》的嘲諷語氣與離心立場以了解並詮釋史坦迦特的可能意圖。最後一章則論《超難過的真實愛情故事》中,反烏托邦社會裡,史坦迦特如何去中心化,並警示我們如果不採取某些行動,未來將有哪些後果。透過後現代去中心化,本文將探討史坦迦特如何鬆動固有主流的觀點,並帶來前所未有的新視角。
