In her The Case of Peter Pan, Jacqueline Rose suggests the relationship between the adult and the child as the impossibility in children's fiction through her psychoanalytic reading of various versions and adaptions of Peter Pan and their appropriation in cultural phenomena in Britain. Rose has rattled the cage of children's literature criticism, and The Case of Peter Pan has been lauded, castigated, and misunderstood at the same time. She considers the impossibility of children's fiction is that children's fiction constructs an image of the child inside the book in order to secure the child who is outside the book but the one outside the book is not so easily to be grasped. In Lacaninan psychoanalytic point of view, such impossibility is the innate problem of language. It corresponds to Walter Benjamin's way to approach to redemption. For Benjamin, the redemption is to construct a concept of the present as the time of the now by means of juxtaposing the phenomena whose appearances have been divested into a constellation to avoid the traditional way to acquire continuous and linear knowledge. Rose supports the impossibility as a reminder to the problem of language in construction of knowledge that is also opposed by Benjamin. This paper primarily attempts to revisit Rose's analysis particularly in Lacaninan point of view, assuming the impossibility of Rose as the gap between symbolic order and the real, and then to elaborate the idea of redemption of Benjamin, suggesting that the impossibility of children's fiction could be the possibility of Benjaminian redemption as a threshold.
