By sintering, we can successfully produce the clay lightweight aggregate using the clay from the Shihmen Dam. When the sintering degree is between 800℃ and 1000℃, we can produce aggregate with low particle density but bad particle strength and high absorption. It is not suitable for construction. When the sintering degree is 1100℃, the particle strength is already very good. Although the surface is not glassified and with high absorption, it is still useful lightweight aggregate. At 1200℃, the particle density is about 1800 kg/m3 and the absorption is around 3 to 4%. Furthermore, the surface is covered with a smooth and glassified layer and the particle strength is good.
Concrete mixed with the clay lightweight aggregate will have drying unit weight a quarter lower than normal concrete. When its cement content is about 290 kg/m3 and 480 kg/m3, its 28-day compressive strength can reach above 20 Mpa and 40 Mpa, which indicates that the essence of the aggregate is good. Lightweight bricks made out of the clay aggregate with the particle density of 940 kg/m3 and particle number of 12~9 mm can obtain an 28-day compressive strength of about 5 Mpa. The drying unit weight can be lowered to 900 kg/m3 while the thermal conductivity is approximately 0.6kcal/℃.
