Palladium Catalyzed Suzuki Reactions Using Cobalt-containing Bulky Monodentate Phosphines

Three bulky, mono-dentate alkyne-bridged dicobalt-phosphine complexes [(m-PPh2CH2PPh2)Co2(CO)4](m,h-PhC≡CPPh2) 5, [(m-PPh2CH2PPh2)Co2(CO)4](m,h-Me3C≡CPPh2) 6 and [(m-PPh2CH2PPh2)Co2(CO)4](m,h-PhC≡CPCy2) 7, were prepared from a two-step synthetic procedure. In addition, three oxidized complexes [(m-PPh2CH2PPh2)Co2(CO)4](m,h-PhC≡CP(=O)Ph2) 8, [(m-PPh2CH2PPh2)Co2(CO)4](m,h-Me3C≡CP(=O)Ph2) 9 and [(m-PPh2CH2PPh2)Co2(CO)4](m,h-PhC≡CP(=O)Cy2) 10 were also obtained along with 5, 6 and 7 during the chromatographic processes.
These three metal-containing compounds 5, 6 and 7 have been proved to be effective monodentate phosphine ligands in this report. Besides, combination palladium acetate and ligand 7 gave a highly active catalyst for the Suzuki reaction of aryl bromides and allowed Suzuki couplings to be carried out at low catalyst loadings (0.001-0.1 mol % Pd).
Key reaction parameters such as 7/Pd ratio, choice of base, solvent volume as well as electronic variation of the aryl bromides have also been investigated and are reported.
