In a highly competitive environment with the rapid change, high-tech firms utilize capital-intensive facilities, technology-intensive products, high skilled labor, and computer applications as their competitive advantages. It leads to employees in the high-tech firms are required to perform more complex jobs and tasks. However, that whether the tasks meet their values and goals is an important management issue. On the other hand, employees' job satisfaction is regarded as a surrogate measure of organizational success/effectiveness. Therefore, this study attempts to improve job satisfaction through task value and goal orientations.
Although task value and goal orientations have received fairly extensive attention from educational research, issue regarding the field of work is seriously ignored, especially complex contexts like high-tech firms. The purpose of this study is to examine that whether there exists a link between these two themes (i.e. task value and goal orientations) and job satisfaction. Based on a survey of 156 respondents taken from six international high-tech companies in Taiwan, the results show that task value and goal orientations have positive effects on employees' job satisfaction in the high-tech context. Furthermore, we employ the integrated model combining two themes to reveal the results. Limitations of this study, implications of our findings and directions for future studies are discussed.
