Relationship failure is the source of outsourcing risk. Relational investment is considered to be appropriate to prevent from relationship failure. However,operational model is absent and empirical evidence is lacking. Thus, the study aims to construct an analysis model to examine logistics outsourcing risk by relationship investment, based on transaction cost economics (TCE) and resource based view (RBV). The effects of TCE and RBV were compared and their complementarities were assessed. The risk model consists of relationship failure on asset risk and competence risk, as well as the correlation between these two risks. Relationship investment classified into two levels is served as moderating effect for analysis.
Transportation outsourcing of Taiwanese grocery wholesalers was applied as case study. Through the telephone interviews, we collected the valid samples of 40
wholesalers (response rate of 57.14%). Statistics indicate that the risk perception may vary with the increasing relationship investments. And in terms of the importance of
failure events and risk impacts, pattern was significantly different by relationship investment types, according to our examination from Analytic Network Process. This study fills a gap in the literature, where prior work has seldom used empirical research to examine the relationship failure events and risk impacts in logistics outsourcing by relationship investment. Further, the risk model developed herein can be used as an analytical structure to compare and verify the outsourcing theories.
