The production of organic wastes was increased with increasing industrial development and population, therefore, causes more environmental crisis. Thermocomposting has been adopted as a basic tool for waste reduction and waste recycle. Vermicomposting, is emerging as a most appropriate alternative to conventional aerobic composting, this process is not only rapid, easily controllable, cost effective, energy saving, and zero waste process, but also accomplishes most efficient recycling of organics and nutrients. However, the sound of this process is deeply affected by the characteristics of organic wastes and its effect on the growth and reproduction of earthworm. The objectives of this research were to studies the growth and reproduction of earthworms and the qualities of vermicompost affected by the characteristics of different organic wastes.
The earthworm (Eisenia fetida) was grown in mushroom medium waste and feed with different organic wastes twice, respectively. The survival, biomass, cocoon production, reproduction of the earthworm were determined over experimental period. Vermicomposts produced from each treatment were analyzed. Results showed that the survival, biomass and reproduction of earthworm were higher in the treatments feeding with pig manure, cow manure, food industrial sludge, and agricultural sludge than those of mushroom medium waste, soybean powder, winery sludge and diatomite treatments, and related to the Ca content of the organic wastes. It indicates that the quantity of bulking materials and food sources significantly influence the growth and reproduction of earthworm during vermicomposting process. Providing a suitable environment for earthworm growth will enhance the production of vermicompost. Based on the results of C/N, seed germination and ingredient analysis, vermicomposts obtained from all treatments were found to meet the standards of compost announced by the Agriculture Council of ROC.
