Performance of two luna moths (Actias spp.) on three host plants

本實驗利用長尾水青蛾（Actias selene ningpoana）及台灣長尾水青蛾（Actias heterogyna subaurea）於3種可能寄主植物：楓香（Liquidambar formosana）、樟樹（Cinnamomum camphora）及九芎（Lagerstroemia subcostata）上分別進行長期餵食及短期餵食分析，以探討兩種水青蛾在不同寄主植物上的利用情形及生長表現，同時也針對上述三種植物進行植物化學成分分析，以推斷植物營養成分與兩種水青蛾表現之關係。結果顯示，長尾水青蛾在所有的餵食分析中，均不取食樟樹；在長期餵食分析中，取食楓香及九芎的處理在生長表現上則沒有顯著差異，但在短期餵食分析則有不同的表現，推測可能原因為不同寄主植物之化學成分的差異，造成長尾水青蛾對不同食草有不同的利用方式及生長策略。另外，台灣長尾水青蛾在所有的餵食分析中，均不取食樟樹及九芎；而在長期餵食分析中，取食楓香的台灣長尾水青蛾，以採集自南投縣仁愛鄉凌霄殿的族群之生長率最高，在短期餵食分析中，也以凌霄殿族群之將消耗食物轉換成體重之效率（ECI）最高，不同地區的台灣長尾水青蛾，對相同食草有不同的利用情形，推測可能原因為其種內的差異。而比較長尾水青蛾及台灣長尾水青蛾在取食共同寄主-楓香，其生長表現亦具有差異。本研究結果顯示，文獻記載之寄主植物與本實驗之結果有差異，兩種水青蛾均不取食樟樹，推測原因可能為文獻記載錯誤，或者是不同地區的水青蛾對環境的適應，導致不以樟樹為其寄主植物。
In this experiment, we assayed the feeding performance and food utilization efficiencies of two luna moths on three different host-plants. Long-term and short-term feeding trials were conducted for larvae of both Actias selene ningpoana and A. heterogyna subaurea on their potential host-plants: Liquidambar formosana、Cinnamomum camphora and Lagerstroemia subcostata. Coincide with the feeding trials, we also analyzed the chemical components of host plants to relate host plants’ nutrition with luna moths’ performance. Results of this study indicated that larvae of A. selene ningpoana did not feed on foliage C. camphora. Results of long-term feeding trial revealed that no significance difference was found between larvae of A. selene ningpoana fed on foliage of L. formosana or L. subcostata. However, results of short-term feeding trial indicated that there was a significance difference in food utilization efficiencies between larvae of A. selene ningpoana fed on foliage of L. formosana or L. subcostata. Our results also indicated that host plant chemistry may play a role in affecting the larval performance of A. selene ningpoana on foliage of L. formosana or L. subcostata. In addition, we found that larvae of A. heterogyna subaurea did not feed on foliage of C. camphora and L. subcostatain. In the long-term feeding trial, larvae of A. heterogyna subaurea collected from Ling-Xiao-Dian had the highest growth rate when fed on foliage of L. formosana. In the short-term feeding trial, Ling-Xiao-Dian’s population also had the highest efficiency of conversion of ingested food（ECI）. Finally, we found that larvae of A. heterogyna subaurea collected from different locations had various food utilization efficiencies when fed with foliage L. formosana, and the intraspecific difference among this moth may be the reason for the difference. Additionally, a significance difference in feeding performance can also be found between larvae of A. selene ningpoana and A. heterogyna subaurea which fed on foliage of L. formosana. In summary, we found that these two luna moths had different feeding performance and food utilization efficiencies when fed on foliage different host plants. Both luna moths did not feed on foliage of C. camphora, and the reason maybe the intraspecific variation for different populations or improbable host-plant identification. To clarify the cause of this variation, more populations of the luna moths need to be used during feeding trials with additional Cinnamomum genus plants.
