On the occasion of its annual progress report/review in January 2008, the Center for Environmental Restoration and Disaster Reduction (CERDR) at the National Chung Hsing University in Taichung, Taiwan, organized an International Symposium on Structural Control and Health Monitoring as a major component of the report/review program. The symposium was chaired by Professor Chi-Chang Lin, who is also the Director of CERDR. CERDR consists of two major groups: (1) Environmental Monitoring and Restoration and (2) Technologies for Disaster Reduction. The study on structural health monitoring and structural control is one of the CERDR's focused research activities. A total of 18 speakers were invited from the U.S.A., Japan, Hong Kong/China, and Taiwan. Symposium participants came from 10 domestic and foreign universities, one earthquake research center, and one government agency. All invited speakers are currently active researchers in their own research fields and Communities. This Special Issue includes 12 selected papers oil the analysis of algorithms and implementations of structural health monitoring and vibration control on buildings and bridges. All of the papers included in this Special Issue were selected from the symposium program and peer-reviewed. These papers offer important information that should be of great interest to researchers in the field of structural control and health monitoring. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
