An electrolytic ZrO2 gel has been coated on Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimens in 0.125 M ZrO(NO3)(2) solution with pH = 2.2 at a current density of 2 mA/cm(2). The electrolytic ZrO2 gel coating is annealed at 623-1073 K for 5 or 40 min in air, then evaluated by electrochemical polarization in 0.6 M NaCl, immersion tests in several acid solutions, morphology observations and scratch tests. The crystal structures of titanium oxide or ZrO2 are analysed by XRD (X-ray diffractometry). The ZrO2-coated specimen annealed at 973 K for 5 min shows a good adhesion of 580 MPa and a good corrosion resistance in 5 M HCl, 5 M H2SO4 or 0.6 M NaCl aqueous solution. A monoclinic structure with ((1) over bar 11) preferred orientation parallel to the sheet plane is detected at 623 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 698 K and a metastable tetragonal structure of ZrO2 is detected at T> 698 K. Then a more stable monoclinic structure with random orientation and tetragonal structure are detected at T greater than or equal to 973 K. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
