Effect of Amount of Coarse Aggregate and Pozzolans on Shear Behavior of Concrete Beams

High-flowability concrete has better workability and can be used to improve the concrete quality cast in the reinforced concrete members. Bond between high-flowability concrete and reinforcement is also better than that in normal concrete. To achieve high flowability, usually it is necessary to reduce the coarse aggregate content in the concrete. However, this could result in inferior ductility and durability of hardened concrete, and larger long-term volume change (creep and shrinkage) of concrete. It may also reduce the contribution of aggregate interlock as far as beam shear strength is concerned. In addition, pozzlans are frequently added in high-flowability concrete; not only to obtain higher flowability of the fresh concrete, but also to reduce the crack width of hardened concrete. It is the aim of this study to investigate the effects of coarse aggregate content and amount of pozzolans on beam shear behavior. Tests on shear strength of concrete beams are needed in this study. A total of thirty-two beam specimens will be made and tested. The test variables include the concrete strength, coarse aggregate content, amount of pozzolans, shear span-depth ratio, and amount of shear reinforcement.
