Being richly endowed by nature, there are many precious tree species grown in Taiwan. Different wood species and even various parts of the same tree, such as stem, leaves, and bark, vary distinguishably with respect to both amount and chemical compositions of extractives. Therefore, to identify the bioactive components from the diversified wood extractives and to clarify the mechanisms of their bioactive functions could provide an opportunity to expand the potential utilization of tree. In this purposed project, the bioactive compounds that isolated from the extractives of the endemic Araliaceae plants in Taiwan, will be examined. The bioactivities investigated include antitumours, antiinflammation, and Symdron X therapy. Repeatedly through the chromatography separation, spectral analysis, and bioactive assay, the bioactive compounds of Araliaceae plants indigenous to Taiwan will be confirmed. In addition, the molecular biology techniques will be performed to study the genomic diversity of the genes, which involved in the biosynthesis of bioactivity compounds. These will obtain the genes associated with metabolism to provide the useful information for the researches on tree physiology, evolution, gene transformation, and drug discovery in the future.
