The Elizabethan period is a great age in British history, and its greatness is personified in Queen Elizabeth. In Elizabeth's reign, power rested in the office of the sovereign, and to integrate the individual into the body of realm, under the queen, was powerfully under way. In its encomium of Queen Elizabeth, as the title suggests, Spenser's Faerie Queene also participates in this cult of wholeness. Yet of all the books in The Faerie Queene, Book II, “The Legend of Sir Guyon, or of Temperance,” may best exemplify the reciprocity of body private and body politic. The health or sickness of the individual is analogous to that of the state, and the national power closely hinges on personal action. This thesis aims therefore to study Spenser's idea of Temperance in Book II of The Faerie Queene and to show that the individual's dominion over his own body is the indispensable precondition for the social success. Chapter One begins with a review of the sixteenth century expansionist England and how Spenser's view of history helps shape his idea of temperance. Chapter Two will go into an analysis of how Spenser's temperance, in the context of the expanding political enterprise of Elizabethan age, emerges as a militant virtue. With the assumptions of the Fall, however, Spenser also presents his temperance as an idea of regimen to enable a man to do more work to serve his nation. The true home of temperance, Alma's Castle, will be explored in detail in this chapter. Chapter Three will look at men's unmoored sexual behaviors in the Bower of Bliss. Through sexual satiation, Acrasia saps her victims of male energies and plunges them into extended or permanent dissipation. In her garden of sensual indulgence, as a result, all quests have ceased to exist, and the body in order that is established in Alma's Castle is also liquefied in a lava flow of passions. The Conclusion will attempt an analysis of such issues as why the Bower of Bliss necessitates Guyon's stern action against it as well as why Acrasia remains undestroyed.en_US
zh_TW
