In The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer portrays a world where different forms of dominant power operate. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Matt, Farmer lets her readers see, under different mechanisms of dominant power, people's lives are exploited and manipulated. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the way two kinds of dominant power operate and to explore the fact that people's lives are deeply affected and intervened under the operation of dominant power, no matter what form the dominant power is.
In the novel, there are two kinds of dominant power: the sovereign power and the disciplinary power. Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri's analysis of the relation between sovereignty and capital is applied to examine the sovereign power of the character El Patrón, the ruler of a country named Opium. From Foucault's account of disciplinary power, it can be seen that disciplinary power functions with many techniques to control people's lives. Under the operation of dominant power, sovereign or disciplinary, people's lives are deemed as the “bare life” according to Agamben's concept “homo sacer.” Although people's lives are dominated under the influence of power, from Walter Benjamin's “divine violence” linked with Agamben's “homo sacer,” it can be seen that there is still a possibility of resistance to the dominant power.
