Chinese ixora (Ixora chinensis Lam) is an ornamental shrub ususlly planted in gardens for its attractive foliage and flowers. More recently, interest in potted Ixora has increased. This study was carried out to determine the effects of growth retardants, Paclobutrazol (PBZ) or Uniconazole (UCZ) on the growth and flowering of Chinese ixora. Both growth retardants were applied as medium drenches at concentrations of 0, 16, 24, 32, and 40 mg a.i. per pot for PBZ and 0,0.32, 0.64, 0.96 and 1.28 mg, or a.i. per pot for UCZ. Both PBZ and UCZ decreased plant height, internode length, days to anthesis, diameter of inflorescence, florets number per inflorescence but increased the number of inflorescences per plant. The shelf life was also increased. All concentrations tested were suitable for producing saleable potted plants. PBZ shortened the time to flowering about 25-45 days and UCZ shortened the time about 56-65 days. The quality of Chinese ixora as potted flowering plant was greatly improved by PBZ or UCZ.
