Tostrengtheninterfacialadhesionbetweenselectivecarbonmolecularsieve(CMS)layersand α-Al2O3substrates,mordeniteframeworkinverted(MFI)-typeintermediatelayersweresynthesizedtoreducepore sizesandimprovechemicalcharacteristicsofunderlyingsubstratesandconsequentlyfacilitateformation ofCMSlayers.MFI-typezeoliteintermediatelayerswerepreparedon α-Al2O3 substratesviasecondary growthofseedstoformpolycrystallinezeolitelayerswith a-oriented crystallites.Thesecrystallitesincreasedcross-linkstrengthbetweenseparationlayersaswellasgaspairseparationperformance. WhenaporoussubstratewastreatedwithsilicaseedsandcoveredwithanMFIintermediatelayer,CMSselectivityforH2/CH4 increasedto260.9withpermeabilitytowardsH2 of2224 Barrer.Thesemodifications improvedthemechanicalstabilityofCMSlayersandwillassistintheircommercialization.
