One of library catalog purposes is to facilitate the reader to 'topic' concept to find the information needed. Librarians have spent a lot of thought to selecting the appropriate keywords to describe the document. However, relevant studies have found subject heading have been gradually decreasing frequency of use. The reason is due to the subject heading that selected by the expert and subject heading is a controlled vocabulary that, instead of the user common. As these words are not natural language, so regardless of their semantic or structure is often incomprehensible to readers, not to talk about using it. Also the update rate of Chinese Subject Heading compared with the Library of Congress Subject Headings, there is a considerable gap. This study attempts to understand the characteristics of the folksonomy and the feasibility to assist Chinese Subject Headings. Actual practice using the system to collect Douban's tags, and to use the quantify statistical method to analyze the characteristics of the tags, and to use questionnaires and interviews to ask ten students, ten graduate students and nine professional cataloging librarian.
After analysis the tags that collected from Douban can be found that the average number of language and literature classes of tag number is the most and the social sciences is second. In addition 95 percent of books only mark 50 or less tags. Regardless of type of topic tags and subject headings has a high percentage of overlap. Even if only one is marked words are suitable for use as subject headings. The study also found that many tags is synonymous relationship with subject headings. But situational factors need to be considered synonymous judge.Overall, cataloging librarian for more stringent synonym judgment. The subjects were also mentioned that too few subject heading of book, some are also too rough in the sense of the expression . Therefore agreed to use folksonymy do is expand subject headings, like to consider situational factors.
This study suggests that conversion of folksonymy as subject heading model should have several important steps:1. Achieved tag that through existing ISBN of books can ensure that there is due to the particular books and purpose.2. Filter out the vocabulary already exists in the subject headings, and then the remaining tags is worth as the new vocabulary of subject headings.3.The tgas that should use mark its' classification, thereby distinguishing tag term range of topics.4. Filtering out the tag to be repeated in 100 books.
