Biotechnology firms are operating in the rapidly changing environment and facing high competitive pressures that may require striving innovativeness for gaining survival chances. The primary issue in this study is biotechnology firms' innovation performance. Specifically, Taiwan is the major emerging market of global biotechnology industry and located in the central and crucial Asia-Pacific region. Thus this study aims to provide the preliminary evidence of Taiwan biotechnology firms. Via literature review, this study gathers the concept of external market forces that including technology- and market uncertainty, and further considers the effect of competitive intensity on firms' innovation performance. Based on 144 valid data from managers of Taiwan biotechnology firms (23.57% response rate), the empirical findings indicate that external market forces can strengthen biotechnology firms' innovation performance, however, the fierce competition between firms may play an adverse role in the innovativeness. This study highlights the decisive vision for Taiwan biotechnology firms' managers. In particular, the results shed light on the policy implications for government agencies.
