After Taiwan joined WTO in 2002, in order to cope with global competition and the trend of low birth rate, Ministry of Education implemented policies to recruit foreign students and thus brought international tastes into various campuses in Taiwan. These foreign students encounter adjustment problems including living, academic and interpersonal aspects. This study adopted in-depth interviewing, participant observation and document analysis to collect qualitative data of two Malaysian students and it lasted for five months. It was found that Malaysian students had three adjustment issues: 1. Living adjustment: maladjustment in climate, foods, housing, transportation safety and financial needs. 2. Language and academic adjustment: poor preparation in Chinese, difficulties in reading and writing traditional Chinese characters, unfamiliar evaluation style, pressure in preparing written and oral reports, difficulties in registering process, and participation in classes. 3. Social and interpersonal adjustment: difficulties in social connection with domestic students, strong bond with co-nations, and feeling of being ignored by domestic students. Based upon the findings, there are four recommendations for colleges with foreign students and two for future research.

自2002 年臺灣加入國際貿易組織(WTO)以來,為因應國際市場競爭以及目前全球少子化現象,教育部近年來開始積極提出招收外國學生來臺就讀的政策,來自世界各國的國際學生給臺灣的每個大學校園帶來了異國的風采,然而這些國際學生在生活、學業及人際關係等方面的適應上卻也出現許多令人困擾的問題。本研究乃是藉著質性研究的深度訪談法,對二名馬來西亞籍的學生進行訪談研究,並輔以參與式觀察與文件分析,研究期程歷時五個月。研究結果發現,來自馬來西亞的國際學生在大學求學的適應議題有三方面:一、生活適應:(一)氣候環境適應不良;(二)臺灣料理口味不合;(三)住宿適應問題;(四)交通安全問題;(五)財務問題。二、語言及學業適應:(一)入學前的中文能力預備程度影響學習情況;(二)在繁體字的書寫及閱讀上較為困難;(三)老師上課及評量的方式對國際學生學習的影響;(四)預備書面及口頭報告遇到的問題與壓力;(四)選課過程中遇到的困難與問題;(五)國際學生在課堂中的參與及互動情況。三、社交與人際關係適應:(一)國際學生較難打入本地生的社交圈;(二)國際學生比較容易與同為國際學生結交朋友;(三)國際學生認為本地生對馬來西亞籍學生不感興趣。根據上述發現,研究者提出以下四點建議,以供臺灣有國際學生的各大學之參考:一、加強學習夥伴及志工的培訓工作;二、增加國際學生住宿樓長人數並建立諮詢專線;三、加強學校行政單位及網站的國際化功能;四、保障外籍新生住宿優先權利並將接機服務納入考量。最後,對於未來研究也提供了一些建議。
