Wu Ming-yi is now widely considered one of the most distinguished writers in Taiwanese literature. Not only is he distinguished for his many accomplishments in nature writing and fiction writing but also the first Taiwanese novelist whose works are published by major publishers of the world. However, over the past few years, studies on Wu Ming-yi have mostly focused on his nature writing and fiction writing. Few people are aware that Wu's works such as The Man with the Compound Eyes and The Illusionist on the Skywalk have been translated into at least two languages, including Japanese and French. It indicates that most people have not yet paid enough attention to this achievement in English translation of Taiwanese literature. Not until his The Stolen Bicycle, translated into English by Darryl Sterk, has been longlisted for the prestigious Man Booker International Prize in 2018, did people start to realize the importance of English translation of Taiwanese literature. In this thesis, I attempt to explore the history of English translation of Taiwanese literature, give an overview of Wu Ming-yi's life and works, and translate four chapters of Wu Ming-yi's Routes in the Dream to possibly understand the difficulties of rendering his writings. I hope that, through my thesis, readers in Taiwan can have a better understanding of English translation of Taiwanese literature, while providing foreign readers a better opportunity to have access to Wu Ming-yi's brilliant writings.
